Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

house speakers

House Republicans voted yesterday to nominate Scalise over Jordan to be the next speaker, but the majority leader is still clambering to find enough GOP votes to secure the chamber's top role. “I voted for Jim Jordan in the conference election yesterday and I remain committed to doing everything I can to help elect him the next Speaker of the House. He is a conservative fighter and a leader who can unite our party,” Banks said in a statement moments after Scalise withdrew. Lawmakers voted five times on Thursday, but Rep. Kevin McCarthy was unable to secure the votes to win the speakership. The majority party members and the minority party members meet separately to select their leaders. Third parties rarely have had enough members to elect their own leadership, and independents will generally join one of the larger party organizations to receive committee assignments.

House Republican on speaker's race: 'Lord Jesus himself' couldn't get 217 votes

An election for speaker took place on January 3, 1989, on the opening day of the 101st Congress, two months after the 1988 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats. Jim Wright received a majority of the votes cast and was re-elected speaker. An election for speaker took place on January 6, 1987, on the opening day of the 100th Congress, two months after the 1986 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats.

Democrats and durability

Shafik called on the New York Police Department, whose officers arrived in riot gear, to arrest protesters just one day after she and other Columbia leaders told Congress she would make changes aimed at ending the harassment of Jewish students. The school also announced it would start a hybrid learning model for the rest of the year. An election for speaker took place on January 4, 2007, on the opening day of the 110th Congress, two months after the 2006 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats. Nancy Pelosi received a majority of the votes cast and was elected speaker, becoming the first woman speaker of the House in U.S. history.[188] This was the first time in 12 years, since 1995, that the Democrats controlled the House.

Ryan was elected Speaker on October 29, 2015, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Boehner. 20Thomas Foley was elected Speaker on June 6, 1989, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Wright. 16Samuel Rayburn was elected Speaker on September 16, 1940, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Speaker William Bankhead. 14William Bankhead was elected Speaker on June 4, 1936, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Speaker Byrns. 6John Bell was elected Speaker on June 2, 1834, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Speaker Stevenson. 5Speaker Andrew Stevenson resigned from the House of Representatives on June 2, 1834.

The presiding officer also rules on all points of order but such rulings may be appealed to the whole House. The speaker is responsible for maintaining decorum in the House and may order the Sergeant-at-Arms to enforce House rules. Historically, there have been several controversial elections to the speakership, such as the contest of 1839.

Column: McCarthy’s fall was sudden, but a long time coming

The erstwhile speaker, who remains in touch with the ex-president, has been mentioned as a prospective recruit for a second Trump administration. McCarthy broke with former President Trump and many fellow Republicans by supporting U.S. aid for Ukraine and likening Vladimir Putin to Hitler. He said, without the slightest hesitation, that Joe Biden won the 2020 election, shooting down Trump’s persistent lies about his defeat.

New York Republican says Jordan should get a shot at speaker

He added that there are "some folks that really need to look in the mirror in the next couple of days and decide are we going to get back on track? Are they going to try to pursue their own agenda? You can’t do both. And I think we’re going to get there." The meeting of House Republicans has not yet ended, and most of the members remain behind closed doors — where they may be deciding what to do next. So McHenry will have to go back to the floor at some point to adjourn until a specific time. In a post on X, embattled Rep. George Santos wrote, "I applaud Congressman Steve Scalise for his diligence and hard work." That is a reversal from his comments last night declaring himself to be "an ANYONE but Scalise" voter.

An election for speaker took place on January 3, 1961, on the opening day of the 87th Congress, two months after the 1960 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats. An election for speaker took place on January 7, 1959, on the opening day of the 86th Congress, two months after the 1958 elections in which Democrats won a majority of the seats.

No credible evidence has ever emerged to support the conspiracy theories about Dominion and another voting machine firm having helped to ensure Mr. Trump’s defeat. In April, Fox News agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation suit by Dominion over reports broadcast by Fox that Dominion machines were susceptible to hacking and had flipped votes from Mr. Trump to Mr. Biden. The election on Wednesday of Mr. Johnson, 51, to the post second in line to the presidency has focused new attention on his behind-the-scenes role in trying to overturn the election results on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump. If Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio was the most prominent public face of the congressional effort to fight the results of the 2020 election, his mentee, the newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, was a silent but pivotal partner. The elevation of Mr. Johnson, 51, an architect of the effort to overturn the 2020 election and a religious conservative opposed to abortion rights, homosexuality and gay marriage, further cemented the Republican Party’s lurch to the right.

However, Gingrich refused since that would have required a new election for speaker, which could have led to Democrats along with dissenting Republicans voting for Democrat Dick Gephardt (then minority leader) as speaker. After the 1998 midterm elections where the Republicans lost seats, Gingrich did not stand for re-election. The next two figures in the House Republican leadership hierarchy, Majority Leader Richard Armey and Majority Whip Tom DeLay chose not to run for the office. The chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Bob Livingston, declared his bid for the speakership, which was unopposed, making him speaker-designate. It was then revealed, by Livingston himself, who had been publicly critical of President Bill Clinton's alleged perjury during his sexual harassment trial, that he had engaged in an extramarital affair. He opted to resign from the House, despite being urged to stay on by House Democratic leader Gephardt.

Meanwhile, Republicans nationally have seized upon a reluctance from university presidents to call out antisemitism on their campuses in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. The dynamic gained steam in December, when a group of university presidents testified before a congressional committee. Rep. Elise Stefanik, the GOP conference chair, pressed the administrators at the hearing on how they have handled antisemitic incidents on their campuses. The Israel-Gaza war is also contentious among House Democrats, with liberals clashing with some Jewish colleagues early on in the war.

The podcasts, spanning 69 episodes, offer an extended window into Mr. Johnson's views and politics, as he co-hosts the program with his wife, a licensed pastoral counselor. “We are unified and so proud to have elected Mike Johnson as speaker of the People’s House,” Elise Stefanik says to kick off a news conference on the Capitol steps. One of the most influential speakers in history was Democrat Sam Rayburn.[48] Rayburn had the most cumulative time as speaker in history, holding office from 1940 to 1947, 1949 to 1953, and 1955 to 1961. He helped shape many bills, working quietly in the background with House committees. He also helped ensure the passage of several domestic measures and foreign assistance programs advocated by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman. At times over the last 22 days, as Republicans proved too riven to pick a new leader, Gaetz and his far-right cohorts had reason to worry that their coup would result in little change at best, and, at worst, that it might backfire.

10 Most Common Types of House Spiders

house spider

Like all widow spiders, this venomous arachnid has a distinctive orange hourglass mark on the underside of its abdomen. In addition, the small biting spider has yellowish and black banded legs. Seeing a spider in your home may give you the heebie-jeebies, but they are common in California homes. For the most part, these house spiders in California are harmless, but it helps to be able to identify these eight-legged creatures when you see one. This is a list of common house spiders found in the state of California.

Hobo spider

This common house guest is typically dark brown or orangish-brown in color and has stripes on its legs. They can be found in dark, quiet spaces like cabinets and undisturbed rooms like attics, basements, and garages. Despite their creepy appearance, spiders act as effective pest control, eating insects and mites.

Brown Spiders

Brown spiders, also known as fiddle-back or violin spiders, are a part of the Sicariidae family. Some are harmless, but this group of spiders also includes the brown recluse, the most dangerous spider of the Loxosceles species. We’ll start by admitting that most insecticides won’t touch many spiders. They simply don’t stay in contact with any pesticide long enough to absorb a lethal dose. Like most spiders, hobo spiders will eat insects and in this way, they are actually beneficial. There are no reports of them refusing any insect that is offered to them.

Carolina Wolf Spider (Hogna carolinensis)

The large arachnid has a sizable egg-shaped abdomen, a large head area, and long, robust hairy legs. These characteristics give the spider the appearance of a tarantula. However, it’s a member of the funnel-web spider family Nemesiidae. Also called the daddy long-legs spider, the long-bodied cellar spider is a common arachnid found in Californian homes. The brown spider has a slender, tear-shaped abdomen and a small head.

Common House Spiders (With Pictures) – Identification Guide

Common house spiders come in various colors, including brown, yellow, tan, red, black, gray, and white. Their physical features can vary, but they often have an oval or round-shaped abdomen. You may often come across various types of house spiders in your home, but don’t worry – most of them are harmless. Here, we’ll briefly introduce you to some common house spiders that you may encounter.

Most Common House Spiders

They’re nearly identical to hobo spiders except for the prominent bands on their cephalothorax. The giant house spider (Eratigena duellica) is virtually identical to the hobo spider. There is some evidence they may even mate with each other from time to time. The female spider never leaves her web unless forced to, but keeps on adding new layers - old webs can look grey and woolly from constant additions of silk.

Domestic House spiders are not a particularly aggressive species, preferring to retreat when confronted. Brown Recluse Spiders are venomous, but they rarely bite unless provoked. Many times this happens by mistake, when they get caught in bedding or clothing. The best way to avoid an infestation is by reducing clutter in unused areas of the home, in order to minimize possible hiding places. If spiderwebs are visible, use caution before approaching the area, and if you suspect Black Widow spiders, call a specialist immediately. In a home, this can include garages, sheds, barns, basements, and crawlspaces.

Black Widow Toxicity

house spider

If you want to make sure your house spiders are pulling their weight, check in and under their webs to see what they've been eating. "Spiders feed on common indoor pests, such as roaches, earwigs, mosquitoes, flies and clothes moths," explains a fact sheet by Bayer CropScience. Not everyone who's afraid of spiders hates them, leading many people to try non-lethal eviction. Perhaps the most common strategy involves trapping a spider in a cup and releasing it outside, where it can presumably return to its natural lifestyle. This is a noble sentiment (and often requires quick reflexes), but as Crawford explains, it may not achieve the desired result if the arachnid is a true house spider. "They usually spend their entire life cycle in, on or under their native building."

It ranges from 6 to 12 millimeters in length, with a reddish-brown "head" (the cephalothorax) and a pale, speckled abdomen. It builds funnel-shaped webs, and is known to prey on pest insects inside homes. A brown recluse spider has a yellowish-brown velvety head and oval abdomen. In addition, the six-eyed spider has a distinctive violin pattern on its cephalothorax, making it easy to distinguish from the common house spider.

Like tarantulas, they spend most of their time in burrows, making them difficult to spot outdoors. However, these tame, harmless tarantula-like spiders are popular pets due to their docile nature. Despite its menacing appearance, the Carolina wolf spider is not aggressive toward humans and will generally only bite if provoked or threatened. Although they look menacing, jumping spiders are not considered dangerous to humans.

The primary names used for hobo spiders are aggressive house spiders and funnel weaver. This name alludes to the distinctive pattern on its cephalothorax, resembling a human skull. Although the spiders aggressively hunt insects and other venomous spiders like the redback spider, they are completely harmless to humans. Of the three venomous species of spiders in California, the western black widow is the species you are most likely to encounter. This black spider lives in proximity to humans and hides in dark corners, under garden debris, or in clothing. Although a spider bite rarely kills, it can cause severe pain and discomfort.

Port's strategy is not homeporting mega-ships, but rather attracting smaller and recently refurbished vessels with itineraries to easy-to-reach destinations. Besides the Skyway Bridge's height limitation, the cruise port also has a navigation issue as it is prone to fog. Larger ships also experience difficulties in maneuvering due to the Port's shallow waters and narrow channels. Beyond the perfect white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and historical beauty, the rich and vibrant cultures of the Caribbean islands are waiting to be explored.

Personal Navigators: Disney Dream 8-Night Mediterranean with Greek Isles Cruise from Civitavecchia June 12, 2023

And even when you get off of the boat it’s not over – on the bus to the airport in Barcelona they were showing yet more Disney videos. Two weeks in Paris post-cruise worked nicely to remove us from a Disney mindset. And no, we didn’t go to Disneyland Paris or into the Disney store on the Champs-Elysees.

Day 8 – June 17, 2022 – Naples, Italy

A lot of people ask me about the kids’ clubs on Disney cruises. Honestly, of all of the things to do on the ship, the kids club hasn’t been a top choice of my kids. That’s likely not representative of all kids though. Personal Navigators, and other details from the  8-Night Mediterranean with Greek Isles Cruise from Civitavecchia. The Disney Magic set sail from Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy on June 10, 2022. There are additional Personal Navigators from other sailings of this same itinerary for comparison.

Experience the Mediterranean & Greek Isles with Disney Cruise Line this Summer

After Positano, we were back on the bus for a longer stop in Sorrento. It was my first time in Sorrento and while it had the Positano feel, it was a bit more bustling, especially on the main street. We shopped and walked around, grabbed a gelato, and then met with our tour group for an Italian meal that I’ll never forget. You can pick from their 4-course menu, or if you’d like, order two appetizers, two entrees, etc.

Post Navigation:

Stroll the medieval streets, explore the old harbor and 14th-century Town Hall or visit the local maritime museum to see Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s famous boat, The Calypso. While at sea, relax and enjoy the best of Disney, with spectacular entertainment, imaginative dining and so much more. Couples can immerse themselves in the rich culture of the cities– visiting one of Amsterdam's array of museums - and discovering restaurants and bars that are perfect for people-watching. But if you’re looking for characters from the most recent movies? Well, the younger passengers are dressed like them, but Disney largely ignores them. And we cruised a full eight months after the movie came out – plenty of time for Disney to have taken elements from it and incorporated them.

Disney Dream Mediterranean Cruise with Silver Anniversary at Sea

There's sightseeing galore as you call upon stunning cities such as Athens, Mykonos and Naples. Three days at sea provide the perfect opportunity to relax before enjoying more sightseeing action before disembarkation in Barcelona. Natural wonders and majestic fjords await on this round-trip voyage from Southampton, England. Stops on this itinerary include the Norwegian port towns of Mekjarvik (Stavanger), Alesund, Olden and Haugesund. Hike the famed Pulpit Rock, kayak deep-blue fjords, stroll alongside pretty marinas and immerse yourself in the maritime traditions of the Hanseatic League on this truly magical adventure at sea.

Things to Know about Mediterranean Cruise Excursions

Disney announces their summer cruise schedules roughly 16 months in advance and some of their popular and unique itineraries sell out quickly. If you’re interested in one of their sailings, grab a reservation before it’s too late. If you’d like to experience the Mediterranean and Greek Isles, contact me today and let’s start planning your cruise! I’m a travel agent with Destinations to Travel, my services are free, and I’d love to help you plan a magical vacation. My wife by the end of the cruise very tired of the Disney theme and forced cheerfulness of all employees/cast members, feeling like she had been trapped in a theme park for 12 days.

I highly, highly recommend the pastitsio, which is like a spaghetti lasagna with cheesy foam on top. Hello, I'm Alison a Disney Cruise and Travel Blogger with over 40 cruises and more than 30 years of Disney travel experience. I share tips, reviews and videos so that you can have the best Disney travel experience. Which Disney ship will sail to the Mediterranean in 2024? No one can confirm anything until the sailings have been released, but my guess is that the Disney Dream will sail to Europe again in 2024. Then she will sail a number of Nothern European and British Isles cruises before sailing to New York on 17 September 2023.

During this cruise, the ship was under the control of Captain Zvonimir Vidak. The Cruise Director during the sailing was Peter Hofer. The Walt Disney World resort prides itself on being an all-ages, all-encompassing vacation that will allowanyone to make magical memories that will last a lifetime. Explore the culturally rich coastal town of Bilbao, Spain. Take a walk along the picturesque riverside, pay a visit to the world-famous Guggenheim Museum or enjoy the beast of the Basque Country during an exciting daytrip to gorgeous San Sebastian. Inviting freshwater pools and spectacular Disney entertainment await you on board the Disney Dream.

We learned a lot during the guided tour, and from here, it was only 45 minutes back to the cruise ship. Relax along the picturesque beaches of Mykonos or visit local attractions to learn more about this legendary island paradise. Step into history during a visit to Naples and explore the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii.

The currency in all ports of call on a Mediterranean cruise will be the Euro. There are 8 Euro Coins and 7 different Euro banknotes. Just a 10-minute walk from where the tender lands, the train is the fastest way to get to Nice from Villefranche if the trains are running. Once the tender brings you inland, walk up the hill to the bus stop.

Most of the places you visit in Rome will have an audio tour option. If you are planning to see Rome on your own, you are going to want to make sure that you aren’t stuck standing in lines all day. We had a van with a driver (who spoke good English) and were able to pretty much plan our day according to what we wanted to see. When you travel to Rome on a Disney Cruise, you actually dock in Civitavecchia so you will need to find a way to get into the Rome city center.

Tickets cost 2€ and can be purchased from the driver. You can purchase your ticket at the train station. You will get off at the Nice Ville station and walk the rest of the way into Old Town. If you choose to take the bus from Villefranche to Nice, it will take about 15 minutes. We began our day trip to Florence in the heart of Florence.
